This weekend the Cowboys hosted their annual home meet along with WSCU. It is a great opportunity for the athletes to watch high performances of the collegiate level. With twenty-two high school teams present both the boys and girls teams saw more of the Western Slope competition, which they have not seen much this season as they have been travelling to front range. After a tough week of conditioning practices the athletes backed off on their event loads to rest. Although this weekend was not the team’s best performance, there were some huge improvements. For the ladies Maddie Smith jumped her personal best in pole vault at 9’8” putting her first in the state. The girls 4×800 meter relay dropped twenty seconds off of their previous time, and are not placed tenth in state. For the boys, Branden Huisman-Nevin ran a season best in the mile and is ranked twelfth in the state. Matt Howard also vaulted a personal best getting him the tenth spot in state. This weekend the Cowboys look forward to warm weather, high jumps, long throws and fast times. With only two meets remaining before the two-day league meet in Grand Junction, the team is raising the bar on expectations of performances.
